Black Workers Matter-Hear from Darlene Piffins

In a partnership with Communication Workers of American Local 6355, OBS and CWA are pushing the Working While Black and Working from the Bottom campaigns. CWA Local 6355 has been working hard to education its members on Missouri’s Paycheck Deception attack on unions that won’t allow automatic deduction of dues. The two groups hosted “Workers’ Happy Hour” in Kansas City and St. Louis to talk about upcoming ballot initiatives that impact workers (like Prop B and Amendment 1). We also interviewed workers about their jobs, wages and life situations. Some of these video stories will be released weekly up to Election Day.

Here’s Darlene Piffins’ story…

OBS and MO-JwJ Town Hall

Join Missouri Jobs with Justice Voter Action and Organization for Black Struggle at a town hall about Amendment 1, to get money out of politics, and Proposition B, to raise the minimum wage, and why we should vote yes this November 6th!

Thursday, October 11th
6 – 8 pm
William J Harrison Education Center (3140 Cass Ave)

We will have general information about Amendment 1 and Proposition B, and a panel of state representatives and local community leaders who will be able to answer all your questions about the initiatives and how they will affect our communities. We’ll also have snacks and refreshments, and families with kids are welcome!

What will Amendment 1 do?

What passage of Amendment 1 will do:

►Eliminate almost all lobbyist gifts in the General Assembly

►Require that legislative records be open to the public

►Lower campaign contribution limits for state legislative candidates

►Require politicians to wait two years before becoming lobbyists

Ensure that neither political party is given an unfair advantage when new maps are drawn after the next census

►Make sure our elected leaders focus on important priorities — not just what big donors and lobbyists want

►Draw a redistricting map that promotes racial equity and representation

Info Meeting on Election Issues & Candidates

OBS doesn’t have a position on any of the marijuana ballot issues so this is an opportunity to find out more. John Payne, from New Approach Missouri, will talk about Amendment C. We’ll hear from school board candidates Donna Jones  and Dr. Joyce Roberts. There’ll also be information about Amendment 1 (clean up corrupt politics in MO) and Prop B (raise the minimum wage).
