The suicide rate of young African American males has dramatically increased since COVID. Black youth are nearly twice as likely to die by suicide as white youth. Suicide is the leading cause of death for Black youth ages 15-24 years. A newly formed network of community agencies and organizations has come together to raise awareness about suicide and to publicize support services for survivors and families. OBS and Williams & Associates led the launch of Black Male Suicide Awareness Initiative a few weeks before the 2026 National Suicide Prevention Month. The goals of the initiative are to 1) raise awareness about the epidemic; 2) identify and coordinate existing resources and programs; and 3) reduce the number of suicides in the St. Louis area.
